Accessibility

DRAFT — awaiting product-owner approval. This page has not been reviewed by a lawyer, does not constitute legal advice, and must not be treated as approved legal documentation.

The Hockey Board is operated by Hockey Uncut CIC. We want the noticeboard to be usable by everyone in the hockey community, whether you are browsing notices, publishing one or managing your account.

Our commitment

  • We are committed to accessible browsing and publishing, and we aim to meet WCAG 2.2 AA, the widely used accessibility standard, as our design target.
  • We have not yet completed a formal independent accessibility audit, so we do not claim formal compliance. This page describes what the site actually does today.

Accessibility features in the site

  • A mobile-first design that adapts to small phones, tablets and desktop screens without horizontal scrolling.
  • Buttons, links and form controls sized for touch, with comfortable tap targets so accidental taps are less likely.
  • Navigation, forms, pop-ups and dialogs that work with a keyboard alone.
  • Clear focus outlines so keyboard users can always see where they are on the page.
  • Form fields with visible labels, and error messages shown next to the field in plain language.
  • Plain English throughout the interface and policy pages.
  • Light and dark themes with strong colour contrast between text and background.
  • Pop-up dialogs labelled for screen readers, closable with the Escape key, and never trapping the keyboard.
  • Scrollbars kept visible on the notification and content panels, so scrolling progress is always clear.
  • Sensible default text sizes for readable content.

Keyboard navigation

  • All main actions, including posting, searching, saving and reporting, can be reached without a mouse.
  • The welcome message, contact panels and report form can be dismissed or cancelled with the keyboard.

Mobile accessibility

  • The site is designed for phones first. Pages reflow to the screen width, controls do not rely on hover, and the main navigation sits in a bottom tab bar on small screens.
  • The app can be installed to the home screen and still works fully in the browser without any special device features.

Readability and contrast

  • Content is written in plain English, and notices are displayed with clear headings and consistent layouts.
  • Both the light and dark themes use high-contrast text. You can switch themes at any time from the header.

Known limitations

  • Notice content is written by publishers. We moderate notices for safety and prohibited content, but we cannot guarantee that every publisher's text follows these accessibility standards.
  • Some platform-level screens (for example sign-in and password reset) are provided by our hosting platform, and their accessibility is the platform's responsibility.
  • Because no formal audit has been carried out, there may be issues we have not found yet.

How to report an accessibility issue

  • If you find something difficult to use, please email hockeyuncut@gmail.com. The address is shown as plain text on our Contact page; copy it into your own email application.
  • Please describe the page you were on and what was difficult. We take every report seriously and use them to prioritise fixes.
